If you’re not familiar with TAT, now is when you need to start paying attention.  The British trio made up of Tatiana de Maria (lead vocals and guitar), Nick Kent (bass) and Jake Reed (drums) are currently in the studio working on their follow-up to their 2008 album Soho Lights.   But luckily, they were able to take a few minutes and answer some questions in an EXCLUSIVE interview for DOOM!

DOOM - Let’s just get this out of the way first: how’s the new album coming along?  Can you give us any hints on when it might be ready to release?
Nick – It’s still in the Rock n Roll Oven, The buzzer went off but it needs a few more minutes to get that crackling just right!

Jake – It was actually released 7 years ago to worldwide critical acclaim. It was very ahead of its time.

DOOM - Have you found that your creative process has stayed similar to the way it was when you were working on Soho Lights?  Or has it changed in some significant way?

Nick – Soho Lights was very much Tatiana’s Baby, it was mostly a collection of songs that she’s been working on for a few years. This next record, all three of us are going to be firing our creative sperm at it hoping to fertilize the audio egg. We come up with ideas, riffs, melodies etc separately and then bring them to each other to mix it all up in a ‘Stewie sexy party’ kinda way!

Jake – Nick’s just fucking around… The Matrix actually wrote the entire album for us. Now we’ve been left to face the music and dodge the verbal bullets. And if you believe that, you’ll believe anything.

DOOM – You guys have done Warped Tour the past two years, but in 2010 you’re taking a break to get the album finished.  Does it feel strange to not be going out on the tour this summer?  Are you enjoying the time off the road, or would you rather be out there than in the studio?

Tatiana – Given that it’s the first time we havn’t done a summer tour in 5 years or more, aside from nailing this record, I’m  really looking forward to doing some of the normal summer stuff, going down to the beach, chilling out, so yeah it’s partly strange, but also awesome to know there’s more out there than just being on tour at this time of year. Yeah that’ll last a week then I’ll be itching to get back on tour. Warped Tour easily becomes an addiction. It’ll fuck you right up, but when you’re on it, it’s a blast!

Nick - I’m purposely not looking at the Warped website because I know I’ll miss it. We stay in touch with friends who are going to be on the tour this year and everyone one is asking if we’re coming out. I’d love to go hang out at at least one of the shows, just to catch up with friends, and have some of Kevin Lymans BBQ Chicken! Its nice knowing that we’re working on something that we might be able to play to the Warped Kids next year…..you never know….the tune we came up with this morning in the shower might become next years Summer tune!

Jake – To be totally honest? As much as I love Warped and touring in general, it’s been great to spend some extended time back in the UK. No matter what happens for us or where it happens, England is my home. This is where my wife, my parents and my best friends live, and I miss it when we go away for a long time. Now we have been back for a while, it won’t feel so bad going back out on the road for another long stretch, as I’ve had ample time to suck it all up instead of just landing home for a week then fucking off again.

DOOM - Speaking of Warped Tour, you guys posted some great Warped Tour Diaries on Youtube during 2009.  Any favorite moments that didn’t make it into the videos?

Nick – Nope, its all there. We only had fun 5 times last year, it’s all we were allowed! Actually, there was an awesome boat party that was the best time EVER IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE! I had some great footage of it, but then Tatiana pushed me in the Lake with my Flip camera in pocket…..bye bye home movie. Great memories though.

Tatiana – Yeah, there was this one time at Lake Shasta when I pushed Nick into the lake with the flip cam…

Jake – The regular day-to-day shit is the stuff I cherish the most. We were sharing a bus with some very funny people who had us in hysterics for the whole tour. I would have liked to make a video of all that stuff, but no one would have cared. No one wants to see a video stuffed full of in-jokes that they weren’t there for in the first place.

DOOM - Have you gotten the chance to pursue any non-musical hobbies or interests during the downtime?  Or hell, any non-TAT musical interests?

Tatiana -  This is the first time in a long time actually that we’ve been able to take any time to do anything other than TAT, but yeah we’ve all got some fun things floating around. Musically, I’ve been producing a few artists and writing some songs across the board for other projects which has been fun. Aside from that, I have some other geeky plans and businesses on the go which I hope will be out soon enough.

Nick – Hell, 2010 came round and I thought, damn, ‘I’m not in enough debt’, so I decided to ‘buy’ (no money down) a stupidly expensive DSLR Camera and work on my photography. Built a website (www.nickkentphotography.com – Original I know!!) to post photos on and all that jazz and see if I could fool people into thinking I’m a real creative artsy person, instead of a guy that just gets sweaty and shouts ‘HEY HEY HEY’ a lot. Its going quite well, I get to do a lot of different things. Last week I shot a band called ‘The Exposed’, they’re gonna be on Warped this Summer and you have to check them out. They did some shows last year and went down really well. Great guys from Portsmouth on the south coast of England.

Jake – I started making some Nintendo-esque Electro-Rock in the form of Tiger Bicep (tigerbicep.bandcamp.com) and I also started a hardcore punk band called TREMORS with a few friends of mine…. I do website design pretty much full time when I’m back home too. That’s primarily to pay the bills, but I really enjoy it. I love working with computers and coding stuff. I’m a geek that way. Apart from that… wine and food. They are two things guaranteed to put a big fat smile on my stupid face. I had Tatiana round for dinner just before my wedding and I think she’ll agree I am a feeder!

DOOM - TAT’s had the chance to tour with some awesome performers like The Offspring, Alice Cooper and NOFX, but if you could tour with anyone in the world, who would it be?

Nick – Rod Stewart. …..or Pour Habit, that would be the funniest fucking tour ever!

Jake – I second Nick. Pour Habit. No one else would come close. Except maybe Dio, but he’s dead.

Tatiana – Pour Habit, we need to hook that up.

DOOM - Any final comments?

Nick – I got fat…..does that mean I now have a ‘nice personality’?

Tatiana – Nah you’re still a c**t.

Jake – What? He’s still a what? A Coat? Go and see Four Lions. It’s better than any other film you’ll see this year, and if you don’t think so, you are wrong. It’s not a matter of opinion. You’re just wrong. Dead wrong.

Tatiana – Go grab out our  Acoustic EP now up for free download here – www.tatmusic.bandcamp.com along with the videos to go with it and enjoy the summer jammin’.
