HOW TO DESTROY ANGELS “The Space In Between”

Over the Winter, Nine Inch Nails Trent Reznor posted to wish us happy holidays and wrote, “2010 has a number of things planned including new material from nine inch nails and something else that isn’t nine inch nails. I am in a state of rediscovery and reinvention that feels unfamiliar, unsure and exactly what I need.”

That “something else that isn’t nine inch nails” was revealed April 27 to be a collaboration between Reznor and his wife, former West Indian Girl frontwoman Mariqueen Maandig Reznor, and musician and longtime Nine Inch Nails producer Atticus Ross, who worked with TR on NIN releases With Teeth, Year Zero, Ghosts I-IV and The Slip.

How To Destroy AngelsTheir name a reference to a 1984 EP released by the band Coil, How to Destroy Angels streamed their debute single, a seven-minute track produced by Nine Inch Nails alumni Alan Moulder, titled “A Drowning” on May 4 via Pitchfork. The song is available for $.99 download on Amazon.com or iTunes.

Leaving us barely time to speculate if it was representative of the band’s overall sound, on May 14 a full length music video directed by Rupert Sanders premiered featuring the 2nd full track we’ve heard off the EP, “The Space In Between”. The dark, ominous atmosphere of the electronic track are coupled with visuals that feel like an explosion of violence trapped in a still life, as Mariqueen offers up her voice as a soul’s final reflection while being literally burned dead/alive next to the lifeless and very bloody body of her husband.

And people thought marriage might change Trent’s dark and sometimes gruesome visions to a bright and happy shiny world? Rather, he’s found a co-conspirator, and I could not be more excited to see what they end up creating with this project.

The band intends to release a self-titled 6-track EP out this Summer followed by a full length album sometime next year.
