FYF (aka F**K Yeah Fest) is an all ages, music, comedy and art festival that will take place at the Los Angeles State Historic Park located in downtown Los Angeles at 1245 N. Spring St. on Saturday, September 4th, from 12noon to 12midnight.
In its 7th year, Sean Carlson and his compadres are presenting a line-up that is a cutting edge, cross-section of some the most exciting progressive bands on the horizon. This mash-up of bands create an impressive, eclectic palette of music ~ experimental, punk, lo-fi, indie, electronic, hardcore and the indefinable ~ a guarantee for a fun-filled festival day!
A few of this writer’s favorites (See FYF for full lineup!) include:
Panda Bear aka Noah Lennox is a member of the recently popular Animal Collective- making music since 1999 that many consider to be psychedelic and dream like. Panda Bear is a member of Animal Collective, a group formed in the year 2000 and consisted of Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Deakin, and Geologist. Panda Bear veers from the normally happy and raw natural sounding celestial tones of Animal collective, and creates slightly poppy experimental music.
Man Man is a Philadelphia based band with a very rough sound reminiscent of a street band of fishermen musicians. Their music is very creative and has hints of experimental and gypsy/European music, with unusual verse and chorus structures. The vocals are a beautiful mix of a rough and sweet singing. The percussion tracks have several creative choices, as the band utilizes various household items as instruments.
Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti – Ariel hit the music scene in 2003 thanks to a mutual friend who introduced Ariel to Animal Collective. Ariel is somewhat of a local music hero, as he is known to host parties at his house in West Hollywood and is also often seen in underground concerts around Los Angeles. His music, some would say, is a page torn out of the 80’s. Simply, some people love his angelic sounds, and others don’t appreciate what he is trying to do; revamping a genera of music that he believes there is still room in for good music. Ariel will defiantly receive a warm greeting at FYF this year as his recent album Before Today received several accolades from various music blogs.
The full line-up includes:
THE RAPTURE; PANDA BEAR; UNBROKEN; SLEEP; DEAD MAN’S BONES; TED LEO AND THE PHARMACISTS; !!!; LOCAL NATIVES; MAN MAN; THE MOUNTAIN GOATS; ARIEL PINK’S HAUNTED GRAFFITI; DELOREAN; COLD CAVE; 7SECONDS; THEE OH SEES; WASHED OUT; DAVILA 666
There will be three stages for the bands ~ check for a schedule one week ahead at www.fyffest.com
The musicis a great reason to come but there’s much more to FYF Fest 2010! The day will include a stand up comedy show featuring Paul Scheer& Rob Hubel (Human Giant), Matt Braugner (Mad Tv) and recent addition JaneaneGarofalo! … and there is more! Enjoy art installations, onsite silk screening, carnival games, raffles, and local clothing and jewelry vendors including vintage clothes, bags and accessories. There will be plenty of shaded areas to enjoy a wide variety of food vendors including vegetarian and vegan options and over a dozen food trucks. Two public beer gardens will be available for your favorite libations, which will include spirits (mix drinks) and a VIP section run by The Cha Cha Lounge. Entry into the beer gardens and VIP are 21+.
